Maverick and Jane make gourmet popcorn and slushies so good that they may have started South Africa’s next gastronomic food trend. Taking the humble snack to artisanal heights with interesting flavours, the local brand brings a popcorn experience that’s a first in the country.
As someone who only reaches for the salt shaker and ignores flavoured powders, this popcorn is life changing. The butter tastes like butter. The cheese really tastes like mature cheddar. This is because the brand only uses real ingredients in their array of gourmet flavours. The high-quality corn comes in from Nebraska, where the brand also gets its namesake. Way back in 1893, Maverick and Jane met at a county fair and lived the rest of their lives in search of adventure. The couple bought back flavours they’d encountered on travels and added them to freshly popped Nebraska corn kernels on their return. So when Maverick and Jane say ‘Choose Adventure’, they really mean it.
With my rather large sweet tooth, I’m hard-pressed to pick a favourite flavour between the delectable Hazelnut Rocher, Peppermint Crisp, Red Velvet Cake, M&J Famous Caramel and the sweet ‘n’ salty mix up of Kettlecorn. There’s so much choice and everything is delicious! I also really like the Real Cheese and Olive Oil and Herb flavours, on the savoury side of Maverick & Jane’s flavour offering too. As luck would have it, Hello Chicago- a blend of Real Cheese and M&J Famous Caramel- is the answer to my conundrum. The conundrum being that I enjoy nearly every flavour in store, but can only eat so much popcorn.
The store also offers slushies in delightful flavours like Bubblegum, Pink Lemonade and kiwi and Lemongrass. They’re so pretty to look at and really, what goes with popcorn more than a slushie?
